Five people have been charged after police say they “fabricated” an armed carjacking report in Caledon as part of a “fraud scheme.”
Police say they were first contacted in the early hours of Sept. 9 for a reported carjacking in the area of Old School Road and Heritage Road.
The investigators say it was alleged that four suspects, two of whom were armed with handguns, stole the complainant’s vehicle by force and fled the area.
However, police say that detectives ultimately determined the complainant “fabricated” the story as part of a fraud scheme alongside four other individuals.
Police have since made five arrests in connection with their investigation.
The individuals taken into custody include Apkarn Singh, 22, of Brampton, Lakshay Sharma, 21, of Caledon, Sehajpreet Sandhu, 21, of Caledon, Gurkarn Singh, 21, of Brampton and a 17-year-old from Brampton.
The suspects are facing nine combined charges, including fraud over $5,000. The charges have not been tested in court.
