Winter weather travel advisory in effect for Toronto

A winter weather travel advisory is in effect for Toronto with Environment Canada warning that periods of “heavy snow and reduced visibility” are possible this morning.

In its advisory, the national weather agency said areas east of Highway 400, including Toronto and Durham Region, may see hazardous winter driving conditions this morning.

“There may be a significant impact on rush hour traffic,” the advisory noted.

“If visibility is reduced while driving, slow down, watch for tail lights ahead and be prepared to stop.”
Flurries are expected to end late this morning. The temperature will hit a high of 4 C but it will feel significantly cooler this morning, when the wind chill makes it feel closer to -8.

“Bursts of lake effect snow through the morning hours continue to make travel difficult for many on this Remembrance Day,” CP24 Meteorologist Bill Coulter said Tuesday.

“Winter weather travel advisories are in place but should be dropped by the lunch hour.”

He said shifting winds and warmer weather will end the lake effect event this afternoon.

More flurries are possible on Wednesday morning before the precipitation switches to rain. A high of 7 C is in Toronto’s forecast on Wednesday.

Toronto is seeing an early start to winter this year, with Sunday’s snowfall breaking two decades-old weather records.

Environment Canada said 9.8 centimetres of snow fell in Toronto on Sunday, with more accumulation early Monday morning.

The storm marks the highest two-day snowfall total Toronto has seen this early in the year since October 21 and 22, 1981, when six centimetres fell. It was also the snowiest Nov. 9 on record in 54 years.
