Caliber – At least 1,500 inmates have fled from Nakhu prison in Lalitpur, Nepal, amid nationwide unrest.

Local outlet Khabarhub reported that the mass escape followed the release of Rastriya Swatantra Party leader Rabi Lamichhane.

All prisoners in Nakhu left the facility after their release.

At the time of the disturbances, the prison held no fewer than 1,500 inmates. The outlet said police abandoned their posts, allowing prisoners to escape.

Authorities are monitoring the situation closely, warning that the large-scale release of inmates poses a potential threat to public safety.
