SIU investigating after officer discharges firearm at carjacking suspect: Toronto police

The province’s police watchdog is investigating after Toronto police say an officer discharged their firearm during an interaction with a carjacking suspect in Mississauga.

The incident occurred in the area of Tomken Road and Dundas Street at around 9 p.m. on Wednesday night.

In a news release, the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said preliminary information suggests that officers were stationed in a parking garage in the area as part of an investigation into a carjacking that had taken place days earlier.

“When two men approached a vehicle of interest, the officers conducted a takedown,” the news release read.

While one suspect was arrested, the SIU said, the second suspect became involved in an interaction with police, leading to one officer discharging their firearm.

The man fled the scene and the SIU said it is unclear if he was injured as he has not yet been located.

Police said no officers were injured in the interaction.

The SIU subsequently invoked its mandate and will be probing the circumstances surrounding the officer’s decision to discharge their firearm.

Three investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to the case, the SIU said.

Investigators are asking anyone with information about the case, as well as photos or videos, to contact the SIU at 1-800-787-8529 or online at https://siu.on.ca/en/appeals.php.
