Rain-soaked Sunday and gusty Monday ahead as multiple weather advisories hit Toronto

Must read

As the calendar winds down, the weather is winding up, with Environment Canada warning of flooding risks and strong winds across Toronto

Environment Canada says a Yellow Warning is in effect for much of southern Ontario, including the GTA, with 20 to 40 millimetres of rain and freezing rain expected between Sunday afternoon and Monday morning, followed by strong wind gusts reaching up to 80 km/h on Monday.

Here’s a breakdown what you need to know.

Heavy rain and freezing rain for today

Rain, heavy at times, is forecast to begin near noon today, initially falling as freezing rain in some areas before transitioning to rain later in the day.

Some roads may become impassable, particularly in low-lying areas, and residents are being advised to stay away from rivers, creeks and culverts.

“Rain and freezing rain will be heavy at times through the afternoon and evening,” Environment Canada said, noting conditions are expected to ease by Monday morning.

Gusty winds to follow on Monday

A special weather statement is also in effect for Monday, with strong wind gusts of 70 to 80 km/h expected to develop in the morning as a strong cold front passes through.

The winds are projected to ease later in the evening as they shift to the northwest, but officials note, “areas that will receive ice accretion from freezing rain will be most vulnerable.”

There is also a possibility that some areas will see local utility outages along with damage to roofs, fences, tree branches and soft shelters.

It should also be noted that similar warnings and advisories are also in place for Peel region, York region and Durham.

Environment Canada says residents should secure loose any objects around them and continue to monitor weather alerts as conditions evolve.
