RCMP in Halifax have charged a man who barricaded himself inside a home in Eastern Passage, N.S.
The man is scheduled to appear in Dartmouth provincial court on Tuesday. He faces charges including:
five counts of assaulting a peace officer
two counts of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
two counts of resisting arrest
two counts of mischief
one count of failure to comply with an undertaking
At approximately 3:35 p.m. on Friday, police responded to a report that a man was attempting to break into a home on Cow Bay Road, according to a Saturday news release.
Police said the man returned to a home on Orion Drive and refused to leave when they arrived on the scene.
Police asked neighbor’s to shelter in place, and an RCMP negotiator was brought in to assist with the crisis, the release said.
The man allegedly lit a fire inside the residence, prompting police to call fire services to the scene.
An RCMP emergency response team arrived, and the man left the home but refused to comply with police instructions, the release said.
The man allegedly assaulted officers while resisting arrest. Police used a Taser while detaining and arresting him, it added.
Police said the man sustained minor injuries and was taken to hospital by EHS.
The investigation is ongoing.
